In June, Judge Alexander Nikulin was part of a jury that sentenced to death three foreign fighters who fought on the Ukrainian side.
The three, two Britons and one Moroccan, were sentenced to death in June but were released and allowed to return home in September.
Now someone has tried to kill Nikulin, says the pro-Russian leader of the self-proclaimed independent republic of Donetsk, Denis Pushilin.
– There was an attempt, with the use of firearms, of a judge of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Donetsk, Alexander Nikulin, writes Puzhilin on the Telegram message channel.
Putin says he plans a new mobilization
– Your condition is assessed by doctors as stable but serious. I wish Alexander Nikulin a speedy recovery, he further writes.
He immediately blamed the Ukrainian authorities, saying the attack took place in the city of Vuhlehirsk in Donetsk. He refers to the attempted murder as a “despicable terrorist attack”.
He also claimed that Nikulin’s job was to judge the “neo-Nazis”. Since the beginning of the war, the Russian authorities have claimed to be in Ukraine to rid the country of the Nazis.
