The Isala MS center participates, among other things, in various national surveys. They mainly focus on drug use. Consider studies to determine whether MS patients can safely stop taking medications when their MS is stable. Or look for the possibility of reducing the frequency with which certain infusions should be given.
“We are obviously very proud of the recognition for our SM center. We did it as a chain, so not only from neurology, but also from rehabilitation medicine and medical psychology, “says neurologist Esther Zeinstra.
Investigations of the SM Center
In addition to participating in national studies, the Isala MS center also initiates studies themselves. The digitalization of healthcare is an important spearhead in this sense. The MonSter study is a good example of this. The center received a grant for this from the Isala Innovation and Science Fund and the MS Fund. “We want to find out what digital contact means for MS patients. As a result, for example, they don’t have to go to the hospital that often for an appointment, but they can contact us easily. We think we can improve healthcare in this way, but it has never been scientifically proven. That’s why this research, ”Esther says.
Another study from the Isala MS center is the smart lab. The possibilities of having patients draw blood at home are being studied so that they no longer have to go to hospital all the time. This research is conducted in collaboration with the KCL and patients.
‘smell’ if someone has MS
Finally, there is still an investigation into eNose. “With eNose, we are looking into whether we can make diagnosing MS easier and faster. The idea is that the eNose can “smell” regardless of whether someone has MS or not. The first results are promising, but the use is obviously only in the research field. You first have to create a great model and test it further before you can use it in practice, ”says Esther.
In addition, the MS center also wants to use eNose to determine the cause if someone has suffered from MS due to a so-called relapse. This is the emergence of new complaints from Member States or an increase in existing complaints. However, these disorders can also be caused by other causes, such as stress or a bladder infection. It is therefore being investigated whether eNose could play a role in this. “The intention is that Rozemarijn Ettema, who is preparing to become a neurologist, will do her PhD on this,” says Esther.
