TomTom has announced a new navigation platform, TomTom Maps Platform. Through this platform, new and more detailed maps will be developed and it will be possible to create an ecosystem between partner companies capable of exchanging navigation data.
The maps that TomTom will develop via the TomTom Maps Platform will according to the company provide greater geographic coverage and support more different data types. What they are is unclear. TomTom also wants to improve update cycles via the platform. The company therefore speaks of continuous updates for new maps.
To achieve this, TomTom will merge its data with data from so-called “super sources”. According to the Dutch company, these are sources that can provide huge amounts of accurate location data in a cost-effective way. The company lists its acquisition mobile vans, MoMa, for example, but also refers to partner companies and open source projects such as OpenStreetMap. The company plans to engage more partners over the next year to further enhance the map navigation experience. The first maps created for the platform are expected to be released in the second quarter of 2023.
According to the Dutch company, there is a strong demand from companies for navigation technology. TomTom mentions companies like Uber and Deliveroo that may have been created in recent years by this technology. Initially, the new platform seems to be aimed at companies as well.
