Rainy season makes DHF prone, Jogja City is on alert by deploying Wolbachia mosquitoes

Dengue hemorrhagic fever is a dangerous disease. The reason is that the disease spread by the Aedes aegypti mosquito can take a person’s life if manipulation is too late and inappropriate.

That is why the Health Office of the City of Yogyakarta in collaboration with the Gadjah Mada University Faculty of Medicine then tried to address the DHF problem using the Aedes aegypti mosquito which already contains Wolbachia bacteria.

Wolbachia bacteria are a type of bacteria found in insect body cells. This bacterium is found in various insects such as moths, beetles, fruit flies, up to mosquitoes. However, this bacterium is not present in the Aedes aegypti mosquito as a vector that transmits the dengue virus.

In fact, these bacteria can suppress the replication of the dengue virus because these bacteria are able to compete with viruses when they take food from mosquito body cells. This bacterium also cannot be transmitted to humans by mosquitoes, so it can be said to be safe.
