Maronite Patriarch: We urge the deputies to carry out their duty quickly and elect a new president

The Maronite patriarch, Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros Al-Rahi, presided over the Divine Liturgy on Sunday 30 October at the Church of the Patriarchal Monument in Bkerke and gave a sermon entitled “When the Son of Man will come in his glory” (Mt 25 , 31), and said: «Today’s Gospel speaks of public judgment by completing the count of Mercy and justice, and likewise the judgment of every human being takes place at the hour of his death and of his presence before the divine throne.

In his homily, presiding over Sunday mass, Patriarch Mar Bechara Boutros Al-Rahi said: “If there was an atom of mercy and justice among our influential political officials who hold the keys to the solution and connection, towards the people Lebanese, they would not let them groan under the weight of poverty, deprivation, injustice and displacement, and they would not destroy state institutions afterwards. To achieve his presidency, which is above all other presidencies and institutions, so they put this supreme and fundamental presidency in a vacuum, either deliberately, or foolishly, or selfish! The presidency The return to the tone of the troika is over, because it upsets the harmony between powers and the separation between them, and questions the concept of the emergence of the Lebanese state, its charter and its national partnership, and generates constitutional chaos.

His Beatitude added that “with the end of the mandate of His Excellency President Michel Aoun, we join the Lebanese in his greeting and wish him well and success after a long life in various military and national posts, reaching the Presidency of the Republic, who leaves today without handing him over to a successor, nor to a real government with full powers. His reign was easy, but fraught with dangers and difficult circumstances. Lebanon was in the midst of the centers and conflicts of the region and experienced the worst existential crisis in his modern history, which has affected him and the Lebanese people from an economic, financial and social point of view, and is still in danger for its size and constitutional system A new president, because the presidential vacancy is not as if it were destiny in Lebanon, but rather it is a conspiracy against him, with what constitutes a civil peculiarity in this East that some try to cancel. like a body without a head. A body cannot tolerate more than one head.

“Oh gentlemen, party leaders and parliamentary blocs”, Patriarch Al-Rahi said in his homily, “you have known the date of the election of a new head of state for six years, and you have had all the time, especially in the last two constitutional months, to debate, discuss and negotiate on the choice and election of a worthy candidate for the presidency. Is it reasonable that in the crucial two months there are only three electoral sessions, all of which end with a quorum? today, and the constitutional deadline has expired, at the time of the dialogue, but at the time of the election of the new president.Do you realize the gravity of your responsibility to cause the two vacancies: the vacant post at the Presidency of the Republic and the vacant post of a government with full powers, both of which constitute the procedural authority in the state? Don’t think that the state of Lebanon “walks” without a president!

“So why this questioning the personalities capable of taking this position, and portraying reality as if not all Maronites in Lebanon have a suitable person to take the presidency and save the country. This is a premeditated and planned question, both to prolong the presidential vacancy, or to impose a president outside national constants who is subject to errant projects in the region. A president with experience in managing public affairs, knowledge of Lebanese administration and institutions, the ability to bring citizens together around Lebanese principles and loyalty only to Lebanon and to restore and expand Lebanon’s relations with its friends.

At the end of the homily, presiding over Sunday mass, Patriarch Mar Bechara Boutros al-Rahi said: “We pray to God that he touches the consciences of the representatives and parliamentary blocs, so that they immediately convene the sessions of the Parliamentary Electoral Council according to democratic principles, and elect a head of state with whom other constitutional institutions are organized God hears and responds Glory and thanks forever, Amen.
