The European Space Agency releases a “terrifying” audio clip of the Earth’s magnetic field

Posted in:

The European Space Agency released a five-minute audio clip of Earth’s magnetic signals that were measured by satellites and converted into sound.

Researchers at the Technical University of Denmark collected magnetic signals, which were measured by the European Space Agency’s Swarm magnetic field scanning mission, and converted them into sounds that could be heard by humans.

The audio clip includes strange crunches and crackles, as well as sounds reminiscent of deep breathing, which listeners on social media have described as “terrifying.”

Earth’s magnetosphere generates a comet-shaped field around the planet’s surface that provides protection from solar radiation and harmful cosmic particles, as well as erosion of the atmosphere by solar winds, according to NASA.
