Review: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II – Campaign

The last quarter of the year has already arrived and in the gaming world this is usually the sign of so many new games. Also in the Codfranchise, this is the time almost every year when a new installment of the shooter comes out. That’s it this time Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II. The game is made up of both single player and multiplayer, but in this review we focus mainly on the single player, which is the campaign mode. This was already playable for various players a week before release. We will post the review later focusing on multiplayer.

If we look at the history of the call of Dutygames, especially the modern warfareseries, let’s see that years ago there was one Modern warfare 2 It was released. The studio immediately indicated that this time it was not going to be a remake, but really a new part and a sequel. modern warfare which was released in 2019. The story inside Modern warfare 2 takes place three years after the events of the previous part. Take part in the now famous Task Force 141 led by Captain Price. In that team we find several famous characters, such as Ghost, Soap and Gaz. It’s the bumblebees again in the Middle East, so it’s time to arm yourself to the teeth and save the world from terrorists.

In the past three years, the Al-Qatala terrorist group has not stopped and is once again on the march to upset world peace. Take on the role of various squad members led by Captain Price and Ghost, among others, to fight terrorism. As if that weren’t enough, Al-Qatala is assisted, among others, by the Last Almas cartel in Mexico. They supply, among other things, weapons and missiles for Al-Qatala. Soon you will also come into contact with the Mexican special forces and we will meet new characters. As the groups are spreading all over the world, also come to various places to fight and eliminate the enemies. For example, come to our Amsterdam where you have to eliminate various enemies in the least conspicuous way possible. The diversity of the different areas offers a good variety so that you don’t always have to break your gun in a barren desert, but that you also have to intercept another team as an undercover agent along the canals of Amsterdam without wandering around in the wild. .

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II - Campaign

The overall story is pretty simple and it could just be the story of a Hollywood movie. This is partly due to the explosions, shootings and various action-packed moments. These are also the points that give the story some body. The various missions are well organized and varied. For example, there is a mission similar to the much-discussed night mission in the previous part. Here you are with a squad, full of night vision goggles and silenced pistols, silently on the road. Infinity Ward has done a good job of involving players as closely as possible in the various assignments and environments. As a result, you sit on the edge of the seat in moments of tension and really feel involved with the team. Unfortunately, the various twists and turns are somewhat predictable, but that shouldn’t spoil the fun.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II

Through the history of Code: MW II you are mainly guided in the right direction. It clearly states what is expected of you and when you have eliminated x number of enemies it is time to move on. In most cases this goes quite smoothly and easily if you don’t do crazy things and regularly take cover. The enemies you encounter are not particularly intelligent and there is relatively little artificial intelligence available. You notice this because many enemies often choose a permanent place to stay. There are also some tougher enemies that come with protective gear. This will require more bullets to take them out, unless you’re just shooting in the head. The developers did a good job of making a difference in the difficulty of the enemies to not make it too easy. Unfortunately, it’s only in some places that it gets difficult and you can sometimes get shot one or more times. These are often times when you have to do something, for example, in a chase. If this isn’t done fast enough, or the right way, it sometimes takes a few tries to get it right as it should.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II

Graphically see Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II looking very good. The movies look like real movie images and the characters are almost indistinguishable from real ones. For example, actor Glenn Morshower (Transformers) faithfully reproduced and you can immediately see who it is. Even the environments have been treated in detail and this is also clearly visible in the mission that takes place in Amsterdam. If you’ve ever been to Amsterdam, you recognize the images almost immediately and really notice that the developers have done their homework right. It also goes well with audio MW II. The explosions and bullets literally fly around your ears and you can hear it coming towards you from various directions. Hopefully they can also continue this line in multiplayer where good sound positioning can make the difference between life and death.

When we look at the overall gameplay, it gives us a little bit of mixed feelings. On the one hand, everything runs smoothly and there is a distinct difference in the use of the various weapons. For example, the recoil of a heavier weapon is really noticeably different than that of a lighter variant. On the other hand, we also notice that they have changed some elements when it comes to the movements with your character. Sometimes things get a little syrupy, especially when you want to quickly run across the room for better cover or to launch an attack. It appears that you are not running, but walking slowly across the room. At times like this it all seems a bit cluttered and you don’t get the idea that there is really a sprint. This in combination with situations where various armored enemies come towards you, this can sometimes lead to frustration as you simply cannot move fast enough to reposition yourself. Fortunately, it is only a few moments and this is not a constant challenge.

With a little persistence you will soon be busy for about six hours before you reach the end of the story mode. The Hollywood history and action that can come out of a Michael Bay movie gives you a kind of self-controlled movie. With this we can conclude that Infinity Ward has done a great job again and managed to produce a good sequel in the franchise.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II was played on PC for this review. The game is also available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X | S, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
