Gujarat, 30th October, 2020 (WAM) – At least 60 people were killed and more than 80 saved when a suspension bridge in India collapsed today, dating back 100 years.
Local media quoted officials as saying that around 500 people, including women and children, were on the Morbi Bridge performing rituals for an important religious holiday, “Diwali”, when the strings supporting it broke. , causing the entire structure to collapse into the river.
The bridge is located in Morbi, 200 km west of Ahmedabad, the main city of Gujarat, and is 233 meters high.
Authorities have launched a rescue operation after the collapse of the bridge, while divers have been deployed to search for the missing.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on tour in Gujarat, announced compensation for the families of those killed and injured in the accident and asked the local government to urgently mobilize rescue teams and provide all possible assistance to people affected.
