Matthew Tkachuk got the better of his brother Brady by scoring in the closing seconds of the game and the Florida Panthers beat the Ottawa Senators 5-3.
The eldest of the brothers Tkachuk scored the insurance goal, his fifth in a Panther uniform, just 14 seconds from the end of the match.
Like his brother, Brady Tkachuk also kicked off the red light by drawing 2-2 in the second period. It was his sixth goal of the season.
Anton Forsberg was bombed in front of the Senators’ net, stopping 52 of the 56 shots faced.
Verhaeghe takes advantage of the eyes behind Tkachuk
Aleksander Barkov, Carter Verhaeghe and Tkachuk all led the Panthers offensively with three points each. Barkov’s goal was the Panthers’ first power-play goal at home this season, on 13 occasions.
It was 3-3 when Brandon Montour broke the tie at 4:28 pm in the third period. Matthew Tkachuk then secured insurance to send the Panthers home with the win.
Claude Giroux of the Senators faced Florida for the first time since the exchange at last season’s deadline.
The Senators will play their next game on Tuesday night in Tampa.
