According to an art historian, a painting by Dutch abstract artist Piet Mondrian has been shown upside down for 75 years in various galleries.

Despite the discovery of the error, the painting, which bears the name “New York City 1”, will remain on display upside down to avoid damage.

The painting, completed by Mondrian in 1941, was exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art “MoMA” in New York in 1945, according to the “bbc” website.

The painting has been hanging in the city of Dusseldorf, West Germany, in the art collection in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia since 1980.

Historian Susanne Mayer-Boozer spotted the long-standing mistake when researching the Mondrian’s new museum of work display earlier this year, but warned it would break if hung properly.

The painting “New York City 1” is a tape copy of a similar painting by the same artist, titled “New York City”.

“error detection”

Speaking of the unfinished, unsigned artwork, Susanne Meyer-Poser told The Guardian: “The condensed lines from the grid should be on top, like a dark sky.”

He told the BBC: “When I pointed this out to the other curators, we realized it was very clear. There’s a good chance the picture is hanging incorrectly.”

The evidence seems to support this theory, as the artist’s similar painting “New York City” hangs in the Pompidou Museum in Paris with the density of the lines at the top.

Additionally, a photograph of the Dutch artist’s workshop, taken days after his death, shows the same painting hanging from an easel in the opposite direction.

The photo was published in the American magazine “Town and Country” in June 1944.

Born in Utrecht in the Netherlands in 1872, Piet Mondrian is considered one of the greatest artists of the 20th century and a pioneer of the abstract, minimalist and expressive modern painting style.

He was the founder of the De Stil art group. In his quest for “cosmic beauty”, he developed a non-representative form, which became the term “neoplastic”.

He experimented with Cubist painting with his move to Paris in 1911, but his name is now considered synonymous with modernism.

His works have left a huge impact, not only in the art world, but also in the fields of design, architecture and fashion.

Highlighting his New York City series, completed between 1941 and 1942 – some two years before his death at the age of 71 – is seen by the Düsseldorf Museum curators as “a revolution in Mondrian’s rigid conception of together”.

The curators describe it as “a lively and dynamic rhythm of red, blue and yellow colored lines, which replaced the radically watered figurative language with the geometric structure, also reducing primary colors such as black and white”.
