If you own the Head of Mercury stamp you are rich – here’s what to look for

Numerous are, to date, the Italian stamps which are of great value. One of them is the one nicknamed Head of Mercury; in the next lines, we analyze the history, features and price.

Head of Mercury Lombard-Venetian Series

This stamp takes its name from the representation that it bears on it, the head of the god Mercury, drawn in profile facing left. On her head he holds the classic divinity cap with That which can be seen on the front and some curls sticking out From it. The figure is youngwith a tense neck and aserious expression; also the clothes seem to be, as far as we can see, of ancient origin, in Roman style. To outline the figure are two concentric squares with small flowers in the four corners as decoration; while in each side rectangle (formed by the intersection of the two squares) there is a part that makes up the writing “KK ZEITUNGS POST STÄMPEL” to read starting from the left. At this point, you may be wondering why a series of Lombardo Veneto postage stamps has one written in German; and if you are not wondering, we tell you the same! The reason is that it was printed in Vienna is that the author was an Austrian copper engraver.

Types and value

It was also issued in multiple types and colors which differ from each other in the type of paper and small tricks made to the letters. This was only possible becauseis the matrix of the print ended up damaged and several were created later. Color, instead, it changed according to the role of the stamp. Used, in fact, to close the newspaper strapdiffered thus: Light blue: 1 copy newspaper; Yellow: 10 copies of newspapers; Rose. 50 copies of newspapers. The latter, later, ceased to be printed and a few years later, it was the turn of the yellow one, than for too much pale was replaced by the red one. (of which, however, there is no known example) The value of this piece of history you can see for yourself, Bolaffi, for example, a well-known Italian auction house, owns only one example for sale at the price of € 500.
