Diversity among mammals arose in a relatively short time
Scientists analyzed 322 mammalian skulls. Research shows that the mammals that lived in the time of the dinosaurs were very similar. The predecessors of rodents and the predecessors of elephants also looked alike. This means that the mammalian diversity we now see has arisen in a relatively short time.
The results of this study are “invaluable” according to the researchers and could help us understand how past events influenced the evolution of mammals. Furthermore, the findings can provide insight into which mammalian characteristics are needed to survive climate change.
