After Mexico led vaccination coverage in boys and girls in 2006, the number of children with their full vaccination schedule is currently low.
This low coverage was caused because there has been a shortage of biological products in recent years and the covid-19 pandemic has complicated vaccination due to confinement.
We can say that we had a perfect storm, so people did not come, we had a few years of biological deficiencies, suddenly there are none, suddenly we have, and besides the misconceptions about vaccination, then put all this together. , well, he had the necessary number of vaccines applied ”, explained Dr. Rodrigo Romero Feregrino, coordinator of the Mexican Association of Vaccination.
The Ensanut 2021 survey revealed that low vaccination coverage was lower in the south of the Republic than in the north.
Coverage at one year, one or two years, the overall coverage of the full schemes at one year is 27.5% and at two years 31.1%, speaking of all the vaccines that children should have at that age ” , he indicated.
The Pan American Health Organization has warned that 14% of adult girls and boys starting their basic diphtheria, pertussis and tetanus vaccination program in Mexico have not received a single dose.
If a city stops immunizing the population, then we have people who are susceptible to contracting a vaccine-preventable disease.
If we have 100 children and only 70% are vaccinated, then we will have 30 children who may be susceptible to this disease, and then one of these children has contacts because he travels, because he sees someone in his city with a person who has this measles disease. and he is not protected because he can get sick and by going to his community where there are more unprotected children we will start to have cases.
This happened, we already saw it in 2019, we had a measles outbreak in Mexico City; there have been several cases, it has been the largest number of cases in this century by people who did not have this vaccine ”, exemplified the coordinator of the Mexican Association of Vaccination.
From September to December 2022 the hexavalent vaccine is applied with which 2.1 million children are intended to be immunized. It protects against diphtheria, whooping cough, tetanus, haemophilus influenzae, poliomyelitis and hepatitis B.

We have vaccines everywhere, but if people don’t go, the vaccine is useless, what works is the vaccination, that every child has the vaccine in their leg or arm, “he explained.
It is important for the general population to apply the vaccines they need, all of which can be given after eight months of age, with the exception of rotavirus, which must be applied before this age.
