Mötley Crüe guitarist Mick Mars retires after 40 years due to ankylosing spondylitis

This is a rheumatic disease in which inflammation of the joints in the spine and pelvis can cause pain and stiffness.

Courageous and kind

“While change is never easy, we accept Mick’s decision to leave the band due to health problems,” other band members Vince Neil, Tommy Lee and Nikki Sixx said in a statement.

“We have watched Mick face his condition with great courage and grace for decades.”

Sound of Mötley Crue

His fellow rockers praise Mars for his decision to hang up his guitar. “Saying ‘enough is enough’ takes courage. Mick’s sound defined Mötley Crüe from the moment he hooked up his guitar for our first rehearsal together.”

Mötley Crüe will do a world tour next year, but without Mars. Guitarist John 5, who previously also played with Marilyn Manson and Rod Stewart, takes over from 71-year-old Mars.
