Malaga presents its project to organize Expo 2027 in New York

New York, October 27 (EFE). The mayor of Malaga, Francisco de la Torre, presented this Thursday in New York the city’s project to organize the 2027 Exposition, focused on the challenge of sustainability in cities.

The candidacy promotion event, which competes with those of four other countries, filled the Little Spain restaurant with a large delegation from the city and also ambassadors from several dozen countries to the UN.

The project, entitled “The urban era: towards the sustainable city”, revolves precisely around the sustainable development goals of the United Nations and above all those related to education, according to what the mayor of the Spanish city told EFE.

The idea, he explained, is for companies, universities and other organizations interested in sustainability challenges to meet in Malaga to share good practices for three months in 2027.

“There is no clearer challenge in the 21st century,” added de la Torre, noting that cities represent a small percentage of the occupied territory in the world but produce 70% of greenhouse gases.

De la Torre stressed that there is a responsibility on the part of city managers to “provide solutions” and announced that the Exhibition will be the “opportunity” to host conferences, seminars and congresses on the subject.

Several diplomatic officials intervened: the Spanish ambassador on a special mission for the Expo, Hansi Escobar, highlighted the transformation of Malaga from a Mediterranean seaside destination to a pole of innovation and culture, while the Spanish ambassador to the UN, Agustín Santos , applauded its rich history.

In addition to a promotional video, a message was projected from the Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Luis Albares, who asked for the support of the countries and that the Andalusian city carries out the project to “assess the impact of urbanization on the planet”, foreseeing a “public success”.
