Viewers don’t hold back their criticism.
Francis Weber’s drama “Toy” was released in 1976 and immediately won the hearts of viewers around the world. The film became so popular that after some time Hollywood decided to release its own version. However, American producers failed to replicate the success of the original.
The new version was directed by Richard Donner, who directed both Tales from the Crypt and all episodes of Lethal Weapon. Black comedian Richard Pryor, who was one of the film industry’s greatest comedians in the 1980s, was cast as the lead actor. However, the image, despite the efforts of the entire film crew, was criticized by the public.
As the experts noted, Donner managed to shoot an almost frame-by-frame copy of the French film. Most of the scenes look the same as the Weber painting. The only strong part of the film is Pryor’s performance, who, with his comedic talent, saved the film from complete failure.
The film has become one of the worst in the career of both the director and the actor, and viewers around the world still react very negatively to their work. For example, on the site “Kinopoisk” the rating of the film is 5.4, and on the international portal IMDb – only 5.8.
