US railway network threatened with paralysis!

Jakarta

Member of the Union train in the United States (USA) it rejected an attempted agreement on the local railway workforce. This move has the potential to lead to a labor strike next month.

The Brotherhood of Railroad Signalmen (BRS) was one of those who opposed the interim agreement. The voting results showed that 2,810 or 60.5% rejected the agreement, while 1,820 or 39.2% accepted.

The union represents more than 6,000 employees train goods in charge of the installation, repair and maintenance of the railway signaling system.

“For the first time I can remember, SAB members have chosen not to ratify the National Treaty with the highest participation rate in SAB history,” said SAB president Michael Baldwin in a statement.

Earlier this month, the Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees District (BMWED), which represents 23,000 workers, also rejected the provisional deal. This move increases the potential for strikes after November 19.

For information, workers were offered a 5-year contract with a 24% wage increase and a $ 5,000 bonus. However, the workers refused because it did not conform to their wishes.

In addition, many railway companies have started to lose a third of their jobs over the past six years.

Government representatives through the Committee of the National Conference of Operators said they were disappointed with the results of the vote. But they believe failure to ratify will not stop rail services in the foreseeable future.

Meanwhile, Michael Baldwin said it was unclear when the unions would go on strike. However, he predicts that its members will not be able to go on strike until early December.

The United States has special laws to regulate railroad workers train. These laws are different from the laws that govern most businesses in the United States.
