Washington (AFP) – US President Joe Biden received a new booster dose of the Covid vaccine on Tuesday and called on his compatriots to follow suit as winter approaches.
The 79-year-old Democrat, who had Covid-19 three months ago, had already received a second booster dose at the end of March.
This further injection, received at the White House in the presence of reporters, targets two sub-variants of the virus.
Joe Biden also announced initiatives aimed at getting Americans to get their booster fix before the year-end holidays, conducive to travel and family reunions.
“I ask all Americans … to give themselves the injection as soon as possible,” he said. “Hundreds of people still die every day from Covid, hundreds. This number is likely to increase this winter, but … almost all deaths are preventable this year.”
Referring to the strong politicization of vaccination in the United States, he invited us to “start from scratch as a country, to leave behind the old disputes linked to Covid, to leave aside partisan politics”.
So far, according to the US executive, only 20 million Americans, including one in five elderly, have received it.
