Microsoft revives the legendary Age of Mythology strategy

The era of mythology

While the legendary Age of Empires series has always aimed for historical fidelity, in Age of Mythology, on the contrary, the developers themselves have given free rein to their imagination. They set the game in a world where monsters from Egyptian, Greek and Nordic fairy tales collide, against which ordinary people are virtually defenseless. The game was already released in 2002, despite being a clear success (see ns contemporary review), never got a sequel, just a few data discs.

In 2014, an improved version appeared on Steam, which adapted the slightly outdated graphics to modern widescreen monitors. Now it looks like we’ll have a full remaster as well.

Microsoft has announced that it is working on something called Age of Mythology: Retold. Unfortunately, the accompanying short trailer isn’t about anything, so we can only guess what the developers are actually planning. The recent Definitive Editions can give us some indications the first two parts of Age of Empires (see our review), which brought improved controls and animations, 4K display support, and several new story campaigns. And besides, they also became the vanguard of a full-fledged fourth party …

But I’m already starting to speculate wildly, we’ll have to wait for the official announcement to confirm what Retold will actually be.
