The Times reported on the 25th (local time) that a sonar used by a Russian warship killed about 100 dolphins in the Black Sea.
According to the Times, the scientific community said 95 dolphins and porpoises were found on the Black Sea coast during the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24.
The scientific community argues that tens of thousands of animals are expected to die if dolphins that have not been discovered so far are included.
Scientist Ivan Rushev said: “It is estimated that around 50,000 dolphins died in the Black Sea.”
Rushev said dolphins were found dead a few times a year along the 44km of Black Sea coast.
It means the war in Ukraine killed the dolphins.
“Previous studies have shown that the cause of the mass death of dolphins is sonar used by the Russian Black Sea fleet,” said Serhi Kostenko, attorney general of the southern port city of Odessa.
Costenko says sonar has disrupted echolocation, a means of survival for dolphins.
If echolocation is disturbed, dolphins can starve because they can’t find food, or lose their sense of direction due to embarrassment and rush to a dangerous place like a rock or beach to die.
It is also pointed out that the noise of missile launches and hunting flight caused hearing loss in dolphins.
