FIFA confirmed this to the German news agency a good month before the tournament starts. Another 37 deaths were recorded, these workers did not die while working on construction sites. The organizing committee then classifies these cases as “non-work related deaths” – deaths that are not directly related to work.
In the years since the World Cup was awarded in December 2010, the media reported thousands of dead workers in Qatar. The emirate criticizes this representation that deaths are not presented in a differentiated way and refers to numerous reforms. These in turn are criticized by human rights organizations. Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch are also calling for the establishment of a compensation fund.
