TMAO may be suitable for treating human ailments

The use of TMAO has previously been used to treat people. In 2009, Chinese researchers injected eyeballs from glaucoma patients. In this eye disease, the pressure in the eyeball is increased. The injections of TMAO had the desired effect: the patients’ eyes returned to health.

In 2013, the substance was also used against cystic fibrosis, a lung disease. The substance helped, but TMAO is not widely used. Scientists believe that in order to heal with this substance, you would have to absorb so much TMAO into your body that you would probably start to smell like rotten fish.

TMAO is already used in the laboratory to stabilize some proteins. More research is needed on the use of the substance to treat diseases.
