Novelist Salman Rushdie he lost an eye and couldn’t use one of his hands afterwards brutally stabbed attending an event in New York, United States of America (USA), last August.
As reported ReutersOn Monday (10/24/2022), Rushdie’s current condition was revealed by his agent, Andrew Wylie, in an interview with Spanish newspaper El Pais.
Wylie explained that Rushdie’s wounds were “deep” and pointed out that the famous novelist had lost his sight.
“He had three severe neck injuries. One hand was paralyzed because the nerves in his arm had been severed. And he had 15 other injuries to his chest and torso,” Wylie said in the interview.
But Wylie declined to say whether Rushdie, 75, known for his controversial book “The Satanic Verse,” was still hospitalized for more than two months after the stabbing.
The brutal stabbing of Rushdie took place as he was about to give a lecture at the Chautauqua Institution. The suspect, identified as Hadi Matar, 24, of New Jersey, stabbed Rushdie multiple times in the neck and torso. Rushdie was rushed to hospital with severe injuries.
The attack on Rushdie comes 33 years after former Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a fatwa calling on Muslims to kill Rushdie months after “The Satanic Verses” was published. Muslims consider some parts of the Prophet Muhammad in the novel to be blasphemous.
