With his retirement from the competition, former finance minister Rishi Sunak remained the strongest candidate for the post of prime minister. He could win the competition as early as Monday.
Johnson spent the weekend trying to secure the support of fellow lawmakers after returning from vacation.
On Sunday evening, he said he had managed to win the support of 100 lawmakers, the threshold for running for leadership.
However, Johnson also admitted that the support for him falls well short of what Sunak has been able to provide.
As Johnson said, he concluded “that you cannot govern effectively unless you have a united party in Parliament.”
Sunac has secured the support of over 100 Conservatives, ahead of his two main rivals: Johnson and former government minister Penny Mordont.
