NEW YORK – A 66-year-old man died after being hit by a car in Brooklyn on Saturday after falling while crossing the street, New York police and firefighters announced. The victim was unable to stand up.
The whole incident was captured by a nearby camera, which caught the old man trying to cross in the middle of the 4th AvenueNeighbor 59th streeta park at sunset.
Police said Jose Hernandez tripped and fell on the street and was unable to stand up before being hit by an oncoming Nissan Altima. He was rushed to hospital but did not survive his injuries.
The driver did not stay on the scene, but authorities located him sometime later, NYPD officials said. No charges have been announced and it is still unclear whether the driver will have to face one.
Video of a nearby barber shows that no one came to the man’s aid in the moments following his fall. He raises his head but it is not known if he cries out for help. A figure standing next to a white car parked on the street doesn’t seem to help him.
Tina Chen owns a liquor store down the street and has known the man for nearly two decades. She said that Hernandez lives around the corner with his longtime girlfriend, that she rushed to the crash site.
“He’s a very nice guy, a very good guy. He helps everyone,” Chen said.
This is a case under investigation.
