A group of Barça de Lyon supporters apply to the European Court of Justice.
Lionel Messi (35) moved from Barcelona to PSG on a free transfer in 2021 and signed a contract worth almost € 110 million there. As reported by the “Guardian”, a group of fans of the Barça of Lyon are now turning to the European Court of Justice. There, the transfer should be closely examined.
The state should keep an eye on the clubs
Fans accuse the French champions that the change should never have taken place. Because PSG ignored financial fair play. UEFA fined the Parisians almost a month ago for the crime with a fine of 10 million euros.
The fact that the French football authorities nevertheless approved the deal distorted competition. It is said to have violated European state aid laws. With the lawsuit, fans now hope that in the future it will be European lawmakers who will judge football finances, not football authorities.
Messi’s transfer could become void
As announced by the European Court of Justice in a note, the lawsuit could overturn the original court decision. This would mean that Messi’s transfer would no longer be legal.
The Commission will then initiate proceedings against the French government for “illegal state aid to PSG and French football clubs in national and European competitions”. Furthermore, the French Football Association should be in charge of putting an immediate end to any distortion of competition. (mab)
