Coming fourth in an Olympics is certainly not a sin. But for Oliwer Magnusson, who roared together VM-Guld I Big Air (trick in a big leap) 2021, the historic first Olympic final in the same discipline was a big disappointment.
Simultaneously with the Swedish freeski star Henrik Harlaut shouted his joy over a bronze in Beijing, the nine-year-younger teammate was pushed to fourth place.
He was obviously happy with Harlaut’s medal, says Magnusson ahead of this week’s World Cup premiere in the big air, in Chur, Switzerland:
– Rather it was him than anyone else. But at the same time, I would have preferred to be there myself, of course.
Later in the Olympics it became is an eleventh place i gradient style (tricks on rails and jumps) when Jesper Tjäder was on the podium.
– But fourth place was more difficult than slopestyle, precisely because I was so close, says Oliwer Magnusson when DN meets him in Åre before the winter season.
– It was tough, like. I had set pretty high goals, maybe too high goals, so the Olympics were a big disappointment.
And how is it now?
– Now he’s starting to feel better, it was a great experience to be there, but you don’t just go there to compete, you want to win … But now I feel like it’s a little “restart” anyway. It’s all about getting new grips and reloading.
The captain of the national team Niklas Eriksson on Magnusson’s disappointment:
– We are a close-knit group that is very close to each other, so we talked a lot about it.
– It’s okay that it was sad, but at the same time we broke it down. If you follow your plan and you succeed, you can’t do more. Because somewhere it is also a sport of judgment.
Next season includes a toilet in Georgia from February to March. There, Oliwer Magnusson has a gold to defend.
– It is clear that the World Cup is one of the objectives, but at the same time also the absolute World Cup. I haven’t run all competitions in the past few years, but now I’ll run whatever I have a chance, she says.
Third Olympic Henrik Harlaut he disappeared in Chur because he took a break from the competition. But other Swedes train pre-season on inline skates and in the gym in Åre, on plastic in the big air facility in Kläppen, on grass in Hammarbybacken in Stockholm and on artificial snow at an indoor track in Oslo. In fact, they still have to ski on the snow.
– It has worked well so far, but it’s hard to know how you’re doing before launching the first competition, says Oliwer Magnusson.
– But I still think that the tricks I already know will go a long way.
Olympics in Italy 2026 already in mind.
– That was the first thing I thought about when I got home in March, that “can’t it be four years now?”.
