A Volvo P1800 that has made 122 laps around the Earth

American Irv Gordon, a former Volvo teacher and fan, made history in 2014 when it was discovered that he had a Volvo P1800 that had driven 488,000 miles.

You read that right, Irv’s 1966 Volvo P1800 had driven around 4,876,310 kilometers in 2014. That equates to 325 years of mileage for an average Swede.

A commuter of rank

The American teacher – who lives in Long Island, New York, USA – bought the car for the equivalent of 450,000 Swedish kronor in today’s monetary value – it’s no secret that cars have gotten more expensive – and apparently yes he is so in love with the car that he simply could not stop driving.

In fact, he commuted 20 miles a day to and from work in conjunction with his own adventures. In the 48 years between 1966 and 2014, Irv’s Volvo P1800 averaged just over 10,000 miles per year, roughly the annual average of a taxi.

More original than you might think

Irv obviously took great care of his P1800. In fact, he never ate, drank or smoked in the car. Also, both the engine and gearbox are original and Irv is said to drive very quietly.

Irv Gordon died in 2018 but his P1800 survives. The car is now owned by Volvo and is used for various exhibition purposes and also has the opportunity to test it on the road.

The car in question also holds the world record for the vehicle with the most kilometers on the odometer. However, the question is whether there are examples of old Mercedes taxis in Africa (of generation W123) or old traders who still chew who can match it.

In the video below, you can see when Magnus Walker tested the car.
