We are only approaching a plateau that is satisfying for many, if we are not already there.
Going from 320×240 to 640×480 is fantastic. Then at 1280×720, absolutely beautiful. At 1920×1080, nice.
While everyone has a smartphone where usually 720p / 1080p is really enough.
4K is suddenly only really interesting on a large TV.
8 THOUSAND? Mah.
Speaking of smartphones: 10 years ago, there were still killer features that your six-month-old model couldn’t handle. Or for which you had to have the highest end instead of a budget device. Now anything can handle a little bit of everything.
The same for home connections. 56 Kbps was slow. A fixed 1Mbit was fast! 100 Mbit isn’t very special now and can handle several 4K streams while an update is downloaded and someone is chatting on video. What will 1G (+) bring?
And so on. Tangible progress is getting smaller and smaller. Yes, future proof. At home I was still able to get by on a daily basis with 10Mbit of years ago, except for some waiting in addition from time to time. You can’t tell about 320×240 and 56k.
Global growth is still increasing because there is still strong population growth outside of Europe, where people overcome poverty and also connect to the internet. I will not be able to find good figures in a moment, but it would not surprise me that the enormous growth in traffic is less present in Europe.
