Tips from former WHO chief to RI when Singapore’s COVID-19 attacks again from Omicron XBB

Jakarta

Former WHO Director in Southeast Asia, Prof. Tjandra Yoga Aditama, highlighted the emergence of the Omicron XBB sub-variant that has hit Singapore. Not only Singapore, India has also reported cases related to this Omicron XBB sub-variant.

In light of this, Prof. Tjandra suggested the use of bivalent vaccines in Indonesia as a prevention effort. Several countries have made this vaccine available to their citizens, including Singapore and Australia.

“More and more countries (including Singapore in our north and Australia in our south) are providing bivalent vaccines for their people. We know that bivalent vaccines are different from the vaccines we currently use in Indonesia,” explained prof. Tjandra in a written statement received detik.comMonday (10/17/2022).

“Bivalent is the latest development of a COVID-19 vaccine that can provide protection against older and current variants of Omicron,” he continued.

Quoted from the page FDA, the bivalent COVID-19 vaccine includes components of the original viral strain to provide broad protection against COVID-19. Additionally, this vaccine also contains components of the Omicron variant for protection against COVID-19 caused by the Omicron variant.

The bivalent COVID-19 vaccine may also be referred to as the booster dose of the “updated” COVID-19 vaccine.

Therefore, Prof. Tjandra suggested considering the use of bivalent vaccines in Indonesia. This is to prevent another spike in cases due to the Omicron sub-variant, one of which is XBB which is currently hitting Indonesia’s neighboring country, Singapore.

“It would be good if we also consider the use of bivalent vaccines now,” said prof. Tjandra.
