The new wave of COVID-19 in Singapore due to the Omicron XBB sub-variant is likely to peak in mid-November. NGO Health Minister Ye Kung predicts that the daily number of cases could be between 20 and 25,000 patients per day.
“This is likely to be a short, sharp wave. By mid-November, we will see the wave subside,” he said Monday, quoted by Channel News Asia (10/17/2022).
The Singapore Ministry of Health (MOH) said the situation so far is fairly under control, compared to the previous wave, the sub-variant Omicron BA.5. Hospitalization cases reached 800 patients in July, and hospitals in Singapore were able to cope.

The proportion of cases with the XBB strain, the Omicron sub-variant, has increased in Singapore in the past month. Although highly contagious, it has so far caused no more serious diseases than the previous variant.
As of October 14, 9,087 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Singapore, and nine of them were in intensive care. A total of 562 patients were hospitalized, with 44 cases requiring oxygen assistance.
Will masks be mandatory again?
As is known, Singapore has lifted the mandatory mask rule and a number of COVID-19 restrictions. The new wave has raised fears that the restrictions will be tightened again.
However, NGO Health Minister Ye Kung assured that he would do his best not to interfere with the “normal” life that had been resumed. This means Singaporeans are relinquishing the responsibility of wearing masks, social distancing, and other health protocols.
Singaporeans are expected to be fully aware if they test positive for COVID-19.
“We have never claimed that COVID is an endemic disease, some countries have. We have never claimed that it is no longer a threat to social health, some countries have. We prefer to let our actions and our lives. speak for themselves “, said Ong.
“Self-test, self-isolation if you are not feeling well, wear a mask if you are not feeling well or live with the elderly, to protect the elderly, wear a mask,” he said.
