Lima, Oct. 16 (EFE) .- Vaccination against monkeypox in Peru will be voluntary and free, with priority given to people with HIV and at risk of developing the disease severely, the Ministry of Health (Minsa) reported.
The ministry reported, in a statement, that it had approved the technical standard that establishes this vaccination “in order to protect the life and health of the population affected by this virus, as part of the strategy for the prevention and control of the vaccine-disease. vaccine preventable “.
The campaign will be “safe, voluntary and free” to avoid serious conditions or complications and will target people at greatest risk of developing the disease severely, who will receive two doses of the vaccine with a 28-day interval.
Minsa indicated that with the first batch of 5,600 of the 9,800 doses of Jynneos vaccines, from the Danish laboratory Bavarian Nordic, acquired by the Peruvian government, priority will be given to people living with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).
Other groups will be included later, such as people with multiple sexual partners or who have casual relationships, health professionals who treat smallpox samples directly, and those who have had direct contact with a confirmed case and have a high risk of complications.
The approved technical standard “is mandatory for application and compliance” in all health facilities in the country, both public and private, that participate in vaccination.
Peru, one of the countries most affected by monkeypox, accumulates a total of 2,820 cases of this disease, of which 2,189 have been reported in Lima, where a third of the country’s population lives, according to the latest official data published by the minsa.
The disease was detected in 19 of the 25 regions of the country, although, out of the total of cases, 2,500 have already been discharged, while 320 remain “in follow-up”.
