Bird flu was diagnosed on a turkey farm in Ospel, Limburg, the Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality reported Sunday. About 23,850 turkeys will be killed to prevent the spread of the virus.
Two other poultry farms were culled as a precaution. It is not known how many animals are killed there.
The infected farm is located in a “dense area of poultry”, the ministry reports. There are 28 other poultry farms in a 3km area around the farm. They will be screened for avian flu and monitored intensively over the next two weeks.
There are also 110 other poultry farms within a 10 kilometer radius around the affected farm. A transport ban applies immediately in this area.
Since the beginning of October, the whole of the Netherlands has been subject to the obligation to keep and protect poultry and other bird species due to the large number of bird flu infections. On Friday it was announced that around 80,000 broilers are being slaughtered on a farm in Friesland because they were diagnosed with bird flu there.
