Merkel said Moscow has long been a “reliable energy supplier” and has offered lower prices than its competitors.
Speaking to reporters at the Lisbon event, Merkel explained that Germany has long been trying to move away from coal as an energy source.

According to him, Russian natural gas is the best option available as Berlin aims to “achieve a CO2-free form of energy”.
“From the point of view of the time, it was very rational and understandable to get pipe-bound gas from Russia, which was cheaper than liquefied natural gas (LNG) from other parts of the world,” he said on Thursday (13/10/2019) 2022).
He added: “Even during the Cold War, Russia was a reliable supplier of energy.”
