This September, Nvidia announced three new Lovelace generation graphics cards. The first one, the RTX 4090, is already out and is doing really well. The price increase here was not too high and was well received by the customers themselves, it sold out relatively quickly. However, it was worse with the RTX 4080, which should have been available in two variants: 12GB and 16GB.
The problem was that the difference between them is not only the size of the VRAM, but also the chip itself and therefore all the other parameters. The 12GB version was supposed to be about 30% slower than the 16GB RTX 4080. Criticism of the name of this card immediately started on the internet and a change was requested. Few, however, suspected it would actually happen.
Nvidia Friday night announcedthat while the 16GB RTX 4080 is expected to be released on November 16th, the 12GB version will be canceled.
“The RTX 4080 12GB is a fantastic graphics card, but it doesn’t have the correct name. Having two GPUs under the 4080 label is confusing. That’s why we press the “pantry” button on the 12GB RTX 4080 “, is written in a statement on the official website.
It is not yet clear what the company will do with the pieces already produced. A simple rename would be offered to RTX 4070 and possibly a price reduction, but perhaps it would be too much shame for Nvidia and they would rather throw the card in the trash.
