Patient dies after ambulance accident on Staten Island – NBC New York

NEW YORK – An ambulance en route to the hospital was hit and overturned Friday morning, injuring three paramedics and their patient, a woman injured in a previous accident who died later, police said.

Investigators said the ambulance stopped on Staten Island, a few blocks from where first responders picked up an injured pedestrian. Police said the woman was run over by a Dodge Charger driver.

At around 6:30 am, the ambulance reached Jewett Avenue and Maine Avenue when it was hit by a jeep.

Everyone inside the ambulance was rushed to hospital, as was the jeep driver, police said. Members of the Emergency Medical Service (EMS) are said to be in serious condition, but are expected to recover.

The woman who was traveling in the back seat of the ambulance, and who was injured in a previous car accident, was hospitalized in critical condition, but died moments later, according to authorities.

Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
