Uruguayan defender Ronald Araujo has confirmed he would sign Argentine star Lionel Messi and bring him back to Barcelona if he worked as the club’s sporting director.
Messi left Barcelona in the summer of 2021 and joined Paris Saint-Germain and has a contract with the French club until June 2023, however speculation about his return to Barcelona has not stopped.
Araujo, who is currently suffering from an injury that will prevent him from participating in the Clasico against Real Madrid, spoke to the “Club del Deportista” to reveal his opinion on Messi’s return to Camp Nou.
What did the Barcelona defender say?
The player said in his statements: “If I had been the club’s sporting director, I would have signed with Messi.”
On collaboration with Xavi: “We worked together for a while, things were difficult at first, but he came to the club with new ideas and things that haven’t been done in recent years.”
He added: “He is trying to bring back the Barcelona philosophy again and I think now is the right time to reap the rewards of the work he has done since his arrival.”

The Uruguayan defender said of his confrontation with Gerard Pique, Diego Godin and Carles Puyol: “I have to create my space and show my ability to achieve the results they have achieved, but the most important thing is to make a name for myself.”
Barcelona are preparing to face Real Madrid tomorrow, Sunday, in a new Clasico of the Spanish league, so Araujo has warned his team against French striker Karim Benzema.
He said during his speech: “He has very intelligent and high quality movements, he knows when to stop and when to pass the ball to his teammates, you always have to be very careful when playing against him.”
When will Araujo return?
The Barcelona defender suffered an adductor calf muscle injury and was operated on in Finland at the end of last September.
The player is expected to be absent from the Uruguayan national team at the World Cup next November, barring an unexpected surprise.
