Geneva, October 14 (EFE) .- The Swiss Ministry of Public Health announced this Friday an agreement to purchase 100,000 doses of monkeypox vaccines from Danish pharmaceutical company Bavarian Nordic, which will begin to be administered to patients. at risk.

Of the purchased doses, 40,000 will be used to reduce the spread of the disease and will be provided by the Nordic company in the coming weeks, while the remaining 60,000 have been purchased by the military, which will receive them next year, according to a statement.

The Central European nation has recorded 521 cases of monkeypox, none of them fatal, although the trend of new infections in recent weeks has been downward, as in other neighboring countries.

Worldwide, over 72,000 cases, including 28 deaths, have been recorded in the current outbreak.

The risk groups to which the Swiss authorities will recommend the vaccine will be men who have sex with other men, transgender people and healthcare workers with possible contact with the virus.

The Swiss ministry clarifies that the vaccine does not protect against all symptoms of the disease and it has not been shown to completely prevent transmission of the virus, so those who administer it must keep some precautions.

The cost of the vaccine will be temporarily borne by the Swiss government, the statement added. EFE
