Dutch motorcyclist Victor Steeman died from injuries sustained in the Supersport 300 class championship race in Portugal. The 22-year-old competitor was involved in an accident involving several riders on the Algarve circuit and was flown by helicopter from the circuit to the hospital in Faro.
“Despite the best efforts of the circuit’s medical team, track marshals and hospital staff, unfortunately he succumbed to his injuries,” officials of the Superbike World Championship, which includes the Supersport 300 series, said on the official website. Steeman added that the organs donated by the deceased knight helped save the lives of five people.
Steeman arrived in Portugal with a theoretical chance of winning the title. He has won four races in the season, including one of two in July in Most, and is second in the standings.
Less than a week ago, 26-year-old Chrissy Rouse died of a head injury in a British Superbike Championship race.
