Cervantes’ language was the protagonist of the return of the Hispanic Heritage Day parade to New York, a city where 2.5 million Spanish-speaking people live, mixing customs, traditions and a common history.
It is the only parade along Fifth Avenue that started in Spain and is followed by all of Latin America.
Antonio Morales, president of La Nacional is sure of the power of language to unite cultures.
“Yes, the language of Cervantes and the union with all our communities. This fraternity and this contact that we keep alive day after day ”.
The event, in its 56th year, is the final touch to the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States, which is celebrated from September 15 to October 15.
Arlett Rojas, the president of the march spoke of some absences:
“People are very excited. We always try to include all Spanish-speaking countries. Unfortunately… some… I think Cuba is not coming, they canceled us at the last moment but yes, everyone is very enthusiastic ”.
One of the most picturesque delegations was that of Colombia. Julio César León comes from Massachusetts with Jeep cars, used in his land to transport his delicious coffee… and to “make messes”. It takes three days, he says, to transform them.

Miss Universo Colombia 2022, María Fernanda Aristizabal, engalanó su carroza y movió la cintura como si no hubiese habido frío.
“En la época que sea tengo un “crush” con Nueva York. Me fascina esta ciudad, la energía que tiene me inspira muchísimo a seguir luchando por mis sueños”, señaló Aristizabal.
El sueño americano, que vinieron buscando a la Gran Manzana María y Mónica Córdoba, desde su natal Guatemala.
María Córdoba, residente en Nueva York dijo:
“Muy orgullosa, porque realmente no es fácil para todos estar en esta ciudad, pero siento un gran orgullo.”
Otra residente, Mónica Córdoba, indicó:
“Imagínese en la capital del mundo están los guatemaltecos como siempre.”
El idioma español es la segunda lengua más hablada de la ciudad de Nueva York. En 2020 y 2021 este desfile por el Día de la Hispanidad fue suspendido debido a la pandemia. Pero hoy ha regresado con toda su fuerza.
