In Gambia, the number of children dying from kidney failure has risen to 66. The outbreak is under control, according to President Adama Barrow. There have only been two casualties in the past two weeks.
The first casualties occurred three months ago. The children died after taking a cough syrup that can fight fever.
The drug comes from the Indian company Maidan Pharmaceuticals. Excessive levels of the toxic ingredients diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol were found. These substances can cause kidney damage and are particularly dangerous for children.
