Russian army general Sergei Surovikin was officially appointed commander of the Russian troops in Ukraine. This was stated on Saturday 8 October by the Russian Defense Ministry.

According to Russian media, Vladimir Putin personally called General Surovikin on his anniversary and appointed him commander.

It should be noted that for the first time since the beginning of the war, the group of Russian troops in Ukraine had a commander.

At the end of June 2022, Surovikin became the commander of the southern grouping of Russian troops in Ukraine. He led the offensive in the Golden and Gorsky Luhansk region. Before Ukraine, Surovikin was the commander of the Russian group in Syria, then in 2017 Putin appointed him head of the aerospace forces.
