On Wednesday afternoon, two dead swans were found in a pond on Noordijkerweg in Noorddijk. A third swan, the mother of the two, is still swimming in the pond. The swans were struck by bird flu.
The firefighters rescued the two dead young men from the water. It is not known whether the still living swan mother will be euthanized. There were various emergency services on site, including firefighters including a diver with a landing net. Also present a tanker and an ambulance.
The father of the swan family is said to have died earlier this year after being injured after flying into an electric pylon. Two other young people have also died earlier. The two dead swans that were removed from the pond on Wednesday afternoon were removed.
16.40: Cyclist seriously injured after colliding with the van in Sebaldeburen
A cyclist was seriously injured after a collision with a vehicle on the Woldweg in Sebaldeburen. It is believed to be a collision with a van.
There are emergency services on site. The incident occurred around 4:40 pm.
15.25: Shops and apartments in Stadskanaal evacuated due to a gas leak
Several shops and apartments in Europalaan in Stadskanaal were evacuated due to a gas leak. Evacuees can go to the Theater Geert Teis and the De Spont sports hall.
Theater director Annelies Klunder: “We were approached by the municipality to act as a temporary shelter for local residents. We now have about 60 people inside. They are quite gutted. There are a lot of old people among them.”
The Kanaalpassage indoor shopping center has been completely closed. The gas was measured in several stores, firefighters report. Above those shops are apartments.
Update: Shortly after half past five, firefighters announced that the pipeline shutdown was successful and less gas is being measured. Firefighters will continue to measure and the Canal Passage will be closed for the rest of the day.

2.30pm: Houses evacuated after gas leak in Winschoten
In Winschoten, houses on several streets were evacuated by firefighters due to a gas leak on Hoogstraat. Firefighters are unable to find the location of the leak, a spokesperson said. As a precaution, it was therefore decided to evacuate several streets. Enexis is now in place to turn off the gas.
