Polish Netflix is known for its free, highly direct and sometimes ironic communication on social media. Such a casual style was also adopted in connection with the promotion of the “Dahmer – Monster” series. On social media, the platform posted comments to fans such as “There will be a guts for sure”, “Nothing makes the evening as enjoyable as a serial killer”, “He joined a session, did you divide it into portions?” . Even in the description of the trailer, the line “Grisly crimes, scare the stink and eat people? Sounds like a perfect plan for Wednesday” was not interrupted.
Blogger Skazany na Film criticized Netflix for the way the series communicated without taking into account the macabre context of the story. He posted authentic photos of the victims of cannibal Dahmer on his profile with the caption “Hey, bears Netflix, you lost some pictures of your communication about the serial killer series, so here I am”.
Twitter user Potwornicka also caught Netfliks’ attention. This time, however, brief apologies were issued from the site profile: “Zwe agree with you. The comments are very misplaced and shouldn’t be part of the conversation about crimes and victims. We hid them so as not to provoke this kind of conversation. This communication will not be continued with this or any other title of true crime“.
“Dahmer – Monster” hit Netflix
Immediately after the premiere, the series gained a large audience. In the first week after its premiere, it was viewed for 196 million hours worldwide. Only “Squid Game”, the second season of “Bridgertons”, the fourth installment of “Stranger Things” and “All of Us Are Dead” had better results in Netflix history.
Despite the huge popularity of the series, its creators were thundered by the families of the victims. One of them was Errol Lindsey. His sister cousin Eric Perry wrote that the show’s creators hadn’t contacted the family while they were working on the production. In his opinion, presenting such a drastic story without warning Dahmer’s closest victims causes them to “open wounds.” Other families have made similar statements.
At the end of June this year. Netflix had 220.76 million subscribers, after two consecutive quarters with slight dips.
