At around 8:25 am this morning, the Tihange 3 nuclear reactor unexpectedly shut down. Operator Engie Electrabel is currently investigating what went wrong, but is unable to provide further information yet.
Shutting down the reactor would not pose a problem for the electricity supply, according to high-voltage grid operator Elia. The other five nuclear reactors are still in operation. Furthermore, we are not in a cold period.
Tihange 3 has a capacity of 1,038 megawatts and was started up in October 1985. It is the youngest nuclear reactor in our country.
