T.All New Yorkers who have ultra-religious Jews in their circle know this. There is this brother-in-law, now a successful software designer, but who learned practically nothing in school: nothing but prayer, the Talmud, the study of the Bible. He is happy, he says, that at least he was taught English correctly, otherwise he would have nothing to fall back on after school. Mathematics, geography, American history? No, no and no.

There is this woman who, fortunately, received a rough secular upbringing at home (her mother read to her the Lord of the Rings by Tolkien on Shabbat). But she didn’t even learn the Talmud at school, because as a girl she had to be prepared for only one role: that of a devoted wife and mother.
