1. It can reduce the risk of diabetes
A report published in Sports Medicine revealed that there are positive effects of a short walk after a meal. In particular, a short two to five minute walk can help reduce the risk of developing diabetes by dramatically increasing blood sugar levels.
2. Can help prevent spiked glucose levels
The blood glucose level rises after eating. When this happens, insulin is released from the cells of the pancreas. This causes your body to use glucose from the blood which lowers the blood sugar level and brings it back to normal.
Muscle contractions help in this process. Your glucose peaks between an hour and an hour and a half after eating. Exercising lightly before that jump can prevent that glucose spike.
3. It can help avoid health complications
Why is blood sugar control so important? diabetes is a serious disease. In fact, 37 million people have diabetes in the United States and 96 million have prediabetes in 2019.
It is very important for diabetics to avoid drastic fluctuations in blood sugar levels. Additionally, drastic changes in blood sugar levels can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

The study included data analysis from seven individual studies, in which participants walked or were asked to stay in position for two to five minutes. They do this all day every 20 minutes or half an hour. Each of the seven studies revealed that walking from a light intensity level for a few minutes after eating resulted in participants having significantly better blood sugar levels, followed by a more gradual decline, compared to remaining sedentary.
People who stand also experience lower blood sugar levels, but not as much as those who walk.
