NPR reported that Jupiter had just passed close to Earth on Monday (9/26). This incident also coincided with an event known as the opposition.
The position of Jupiter, Earth and Sun are in a straight and parallel line. Jupiter’s opposition occurs every 13 months but the distance is not always close to Earth.
When viewed from Earth, when the sun sets in the west, Jupiter will rise in the east. During the opposition, the planet will be visible in its largest and brightest dimensions.
It happened after 59 years
Jupiter it was close to Earth in 1963, or about 59 years ago. This event occurred again in 2022 and is a rare event. The orbits of the Earth and Jupiter relative to the sun are different, so the two planets do not travel the same distance every time.
At the closest distance between Jupiter and Earth, Jupiter’s position is approximately 367 million miles from Earth according to NASA. While the farthest distance is about 600 million miles.
When it is in its closest position, Jupiter will be seen more clearly and brightly.
“Jupiter looks so bright and bright that it can be seen as a beautiful sight. Even in a city, in the middle of a bright city, you can see it,” said Alphonse Sterling, a NASA astrophysicist at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.
Sterling further added that this phenomenon can be witnessed from anywhere. Even with the naked eye alias without the aid of a telescope.
It can see 4 satellites of Jupiter
Another phenomenon that can be witnessed is the sighting of four moons or satellites Jupiter on the one hand, namely Io, Europa, Callisto and Ganymede.
Sterling said he was able to see Jupiter’s larger moon a few days ago with just a pair of 7×50 binoculars (7x magnification with a 50mm lens).
The four moons of Jupiter, namely Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto, are the four moons known as the Galilean moons of Jupiter. The term derives from Galileo Galilei, who discovered it more than 400 years ago.
This view can be clearly seen with the help of a telescope.
The Galilean moons are among Jupiter’s 53 named moons, although scientists have discovered dozens of other moons totaling 79.
Jupiter’s closest position to Earth is expected to occur again in 2129. This means that it will take up to 107 years for Earth and Jupiter to be in close proximity.
