Type 2 diabetes develops when insulin-producing cells in the body are unable to produce enough insulin, and high blood sugar levels can damage nerves throughout the body. What are the signs on your hands that you may have this condition?
According to the Express website, diabetic neuropathy occurs when high blood sugar levels damage the nerves.
Mononeuropathy (also known as focal neuropathy) refers to damage to a specific nerve.
For example, numbness or tingling in the hands (or fingers, except the little finger) is a sign of mononeuropathy, type 2 diabetes.
Other mononeuropathy conditions include hand weakness, which can cause objects to fall.
Neuropathy can affect up to 50% of diabetic patients.
Additionally, mononeuropathy can lead to difficulty focusing, double vision, or pain behind one eye.
Side effects of diabetes can also cause paralysis on one side of the face (Bell’s palsy).
It is possible to have more than one type of neuropathy, depending on which nerves are affected.
Peripheral neuropathy:
The most common type of neuropathy is peripheral neuropathy (also known as symmetrical distal peripheral neuropathy).
Symptoms of this diabetes complication usually worsen at night and tend to affect the feet and legs first.
Symptoms include: numbness, reduced ability to feel pain or sudden changes in temperature.
Other symptoms include tingling or burning sensation, severe pain or cramps, foot problems, ulcers, infections, and bone or joint pain.
Proximal neuropathy:
Proximal neuropathy, also known as (diabetic atrophy), affects the nerves in the thighs, hips, buttocks, or legs.
The person may experience severe pain in one of these areas and may also experience severe stomach pain.
There may be a spasm in the quadriceps, and people with this effect may have difficulty getting up from a sitting position.
Therefore, it is necessary to go to a specialist doctor, receive adequate care and undergo medical examinations.
Your doctor will likely order a urine sample and arrange a blood test to check your blood sugar levels.
If type 2 diabetes is confirmed, your doctor will discuss what the condition is, lifestyle changes to make, and medications you can take.
From now on, you will need to have regular checkups to make sure you are in control of your diabetes.
