A fire broke out in the warehouse of a large wholesale market in the commune of Rungis, near Paris. The market supplies the French capital and surrounding region with a significant share of fresh produce, AP reports. Smoke from the fire was visible several kilometers away.

The Rungis wholesale market was set up in 1969 by architects Henri Colbock and Lebret on 220 hectares in the municipalities of Rungis and Chevilly-Laroux. Today it has become the largest food market in the world, covering 232 hectares. It employs more than 12,000 people.
The market has its own train station, bus station, market halls, hotels, and more. Its warehouses are filled with fruit and vegetables, seafood, meat, dairy products and flowers from all over France and the rest of the world.
The commune of Rungis is located 13 km south of Paris.
